Speed skating originally started on traditional roller skates,
quads or four wheels per skate
Speed skating is a competitive form of skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while short-track speed skating is known as "short track.
Later the "quad" style of roller skate became more popular consisting of four wheels arranged in the same configuration as a typical car. Quad roller skating is the word used to describe skating on vintage-style roller skates that have four wheels on each foot, arranged in two rows, as opposed to modern inline skates that have one row of wheels on each foot.
Inline skating is a multi-disciplinary sport and can refer to a number of activities practiced using inline skates. Inline skates typically have two to five polyurethane wheels, arranged in a single line by a metal or plastic frame on the underside of a boot. The in-line design allows for greater speed and maneuverability than traditional (or "quad") roller skates. Following this basic design principle, inline skates can be modified to varying degrees to accommodate niche disciplines.
Road skating competitions are usually long distance races. Similar to cycling races, most races are individual races where athletes compete as a part of a team. Athletes in a team work towards reducing the wind-resistance by alternatively taking turns to lead the group. While riding downhill skiers are in a tucked position to reduce drag. Athletes can reach speeds of 60km/h on downhill stretches.
